Athena International Publishing regrets to announce that the journal Materials Highlights will be discontinued due to strong competition and lack of article flow. Despite efforts to expand the Editorial Board and promote the journal within the broadly defined fields of materials science and engineering, the journal did not succeed to publish another issue on the Athena platform since transferring from Atlantis Press in 2022. Editor-in-Chief Gareth Williams says: “I believe that closing the journal is the best way forward. There are so many journals in this field now that establishing a new one, with no impact factor yet, is incredibly challenging. The number of invitations I get to submit to new journals in this field seems to be increasing exponentially and I end up ignoring all of them as there are just too many...”. Following this decision, Materials Highlights is no longer open for new submissions effective immediately. The archive of published articles will remain available on the Athena platform, as well as in the e-Depot of the National Library of The Netherlands. All metrics for the journal will continue to be updated where relevant.
Materials Highlights has been re-launched by Athena International Publishing and is now open again for new submissions. Since its launch in 2019 the journal has been published by Atlantis Press which was acquired by Springer Nature at the beginning of 2021. Two volumes were published in 2020 and 2021, but after the acquisition of Atlantis Press it was decided to discontinue the journal and transfer its ownership back to the Founding Editor. As of 2022 (Volume 3), Athena International Publishing is the new publisher of Materials Highlights which will continue as a tri-annual publication with issues scheduled in April, August and December. All articles published in the journal before this transfer will also be migrated to the Athena platform. Gareth Williams and Deng-Guang Yu will continue as the journal's Editors-in-Chief while the Editorial Board remains largely unchanged. Materials Highlights is now open for submissions again which will be temporarily accepted via email until the setup of the new online submission system is completed.
